  • Debunking Industry Myths: Social Media Marketing

The social media industry has been around long enough to rack up some pretty major myths. While many myths have been debunked, there are still a few that have a following and linger, simply because it can be tricky maneuvering through trends. Well, you can rest easy knowing that we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the most circulated social media myths: debunked!

Myth #1: You Should Join Every Social Media Platform

This is a widely popular idea and while it seems like the best-case scenario for your business, it’s not necessary. Something that can help you assess what platforms you should be on is to perform a social media audit. A social media audit includes reviewing your business’s metrics to build on opportunities, grow, and improve your online presence. This will help you to evaluate where all of your platforms stand, where your followers are engaging the most, and what content performs best where.

There’s nothing wrong with giving a platform a try and seeing how your business performs, but your business doesn’t need to be on every social media site. It’s best to devote the time to the platforms that give you the results you’re looking for. If a platform isn’t working for you, set it free and move on!

Myth #2: All You Need Is For Your Friends and Family to Engage with Your Social Media Content

While it’s nice that your mom is liking all of your social media posts and sharing them with all of her Facebook friends, social media algorithms are a little more sophisticated than that.

For your content to be favored by feeds and pushed out to the right audiences, it needs to be interacted with by a variety of people. While it’s appreciated that your friends and family support your business, the goal is to reach new people and bring in new customers.

You can encourage your followers to not only like and comment but also share your content to encourage discussion, increase your reach, and spread brand awareness. That doesn’t mean your mom has to stop liking and commenting on your brand’s posts! We just mean that she shouldn’t be the only one doing so.

Myth #3: You Don’t Need to Pay for Anything on Social Media

You can indeed use social media platforms for free for your business to be successful, but it isn’t entirely true that you don’t need to invest in paid social media. In fact, there is no harm in it and we recommend you keep it in mind!

Paid advertising on social media can give your brand visibility in an instant. You’re also able to enhance targeting to fit it to your target audience and fit your budget. While it’s not necessary, it’s also not true to say that you DON’T need it, it really depends on your position on social media.

Myth #4: Your Customers Aren’t on Social Media

According to Statista, it was recorded in 2021 that 3.8 billion… yes you heard that right… billion, people were using social media worldwide. So no matter what platform, your customers and audience are very likely using social media.

This is why researching and creating your target audience is so important. By doing so, you can ensure that you are reaching the right audience and who you want to connect with. Trust us, they’re out there!

Myth #5: Increasing Followers Should Be Your Main Priority

While it’s nice to have something to show for racking up a social media following (We know… it can be cool saying your business has a large following online), it shouldn’t be your priority.

There’s a lot more to social media marketing than your follower count. Your focus should be on connecting with the right audience – the quality of engagement matters far more. Your follower count means almost nothing if they aren’t within your niche and aren’t engaging with your business. It may be helpful to get to know your audience: analyze who is attracted to your products and services, what their interests are, and how you can become a “go-to” for your industry. You want to come across as relevant and useful and by doing so, you have the opportunity to attract more followers who are actually interested in your brand, who will spark a conversation, and convert.
